When to go, how to combine Alleppey's houseboats with Munnar's hills, and how long to plan for.
Kerala's backwaters — a network of lagoons, canals and lakes running parallel to the coast — are best experienced from a houseboat, and they're just one part of a state that also covers tea-covered hills and quiet beaches. Here's how to plan a first trip around them.
September–March is the most popular window, with cooler, drier weather that suits both the hills and the backwaters equally well. April–May turns hot and humid. June–August is the southwest monsoon — Kerala turns especially lush and green during this period, and it's also traditionally considered a good time for Ayurvedic treatments, since the cooler, moisture-rich air is said to help the body absorb therapies better.
Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the classic backwaters base for a houseboat stay. Pair it with Munnar for tea-plantation hills, and Thekkady for the Periyar wildlife sanctuary, for a well-rounded circuit that doesn't feel like it's covering the same ground twice.
A short Munnar-or-Alleppey-only trip works in 2–3 nights. A well-rounded circuit covering Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey needs around 4–5 nights. Longer, week-long itineraries typically add Kochi and Kovalam for a fuller 6–7 night God's Own Country tour.
